Book of the Month: October

I adored this novel! While it reads like a travelogue and many readers may not want to read this type of novel, I loved it so much that it simply must be my book of the month for October. I particularly enjoyed the setting. There are numerous references to the best food experiences and what the malls offer for shoppers. There is even a six story book shop that is open 24/7.

The main character is college freshman Lily Chen. Lily has moved to Taipei to take an immersive Chinese language class during the summer. After a promising start, Lily struggles with a grueling class schedule. Also, her roommate is driving her nuts and she becomes the object of gossip after taking a trip to the local hot springs with a guy she hardly knows.

Halfway through the program Lily is told that her grandfather had passed away. Lily pretty much ignored him all her life but now she feels his loss. Her grief sends her into a journey of self-discovery.
